Getting new brackets can be an exciting step toward a straighter smile, but it’s also common to feel some discomfort in the days that follow. This is normal as your teeth begin to shift and your mouth adjusts to the new hardware. The pressure from the wires and brackets may cause soreness in your gums, cheeks, and even your jaw. While this usually fades within a few days, there are several simple steps you can take to manage the discomfort and make the adjustment period easier.

Opt for non-irritating foods during the early adjustment period. Avoid anything hard, crunchy, or chewy like apples, nuts, popcorn, or tough meats. Instead, choose foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, soups, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and pasta. They require minimal chewing and reduce pressure on your braces.

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water several times a day can help soothe irritated gums and reduce inflammation. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. This natural remedy can help clean the area and 鐘ヶ淵 歯科矯正 ease soreness.

If soreness persists, consider taking NSAIDs or acetaminophen as directed. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label, and consult your orthodontist if you have any concerns about taking medication.

It’s also common for the brackets or wires to rub against the inside of your cheeks or lips, causing small sores. Orthodontic wax is a helpful tool to prevent this. Pinch off a pea-sized portion, mold it into a round shape, and press it firmly onto the offending bracket. This creates a smooth barrier so your mouth can heal without further rubbing.

Keep up with good oral hygiene, but be gentle. Clean your teeth with a soft brush, focusing on the gumline and bracket bases. Interdental brushes or orthodontic flossers are ideal for navigating around wires.

If you experience extreme pain, a loose bracket, or a wire that’s poking you sharply, don’t wait until your next appointment. Don’t delay—prompt intervention prevents further issues. They can adjust the wire or replace a loose bracket before it causes more discomfort or delays your treatment.

Remember, the discomfort you feel now is temporary. Your oral tissues gradually adapt to the new appliances. Within a week or so, the majority experience noticeable relief. Maintaining discipline in your oral hygiene and diet ensures smooth progress.
